Family: Bromeliaceae
Genus: Neoregelia
Species: Neoregelia vulcana
Origin: Brazil (Atlantic Forest region)
Habitat: Epiphytic species found growing on trees or rocks in humid tropical forests, often in bright filtered light.
Foliage: Forms a compact, open rosette with thick, leathery leaves. The leaves are typically green with red or bronze tones, especially near the center and leaf tips.
Coloration: When grown under good light, the plant develops deep red, orange, or volcanic hues, which inspired the name “vulcana”.
Size: Medium-sized bromeliad, usually 15–25 cm (6–10 in) in diameter.
Flowers: Small lavender to bluish flowers emerge from the center cup, surrounded by bright color changes in the inner leaves during blooming.
Light: Bright, indirect light — strong light enhances red and bronze tones. Avoid prolonged direct sun to prevent scorching.
Temperature: 20–30 °C (68–86 °F). Protect from cold (<15 °C / 59 °F).
Humidity: High humidity (>60%) is essential — ideal for tropical terrariums or indoor greenhouses.
Watering: Keep a small amount of fresh water in the central rosette (“tank”) and rinse it regularly. Mist the leaves often. The soil should be slightly moist but well-drained.
Substrate: Airy, fast-draining mix — such as orchid bark, sphagnum moss, perlite, and a little coco fiber.
Ornamental: A vibrant and hardy bromeliad perfect for terrariums, vivariums, and tropical plant displays.
Aesthetic appeal: Its fiery center colors make it a great accent plant in any tropical arrangement.
Maintenance: Low — thrives with consistent humidity and filtered light.
