Ferns

Most tropical ferns prefer bright indirect or filtered light, high humidity and a substrate that remains slightly moist without becoming waterlogged.

They generally perform best in a light, organic and well-draining substrate containing materials such as:

• coco fibre;
• sphagnum moss;
• fine bark;
• peat-based material;
• perlite;
• and mineral drainage components.

Good ventilation is important, especially in closed or highly humid terrariums, in order to limit stagnant moisture and reduce the risk of fungal development.

Depending on the species, ferns can be used:

• as ground-cover plants;
• on vertical backgrounds;
• around roots and cork;
• in paludariums;
• in humid tropical terrariums;
• in natural vivariums;
• in warm greenhouses;
• or as decorative indoor plants.

Most tropical species appreciate temperatures between approximately 18°C and 26°C, with humidity generally ranging from 60% to 90% depending on the species.

Regular watering with soft or low-mineral water is recommended. The substrate should remain slightly moist, but excess standing water should be avoided unless the selected species naturally tolerates very wet conditions.
