Botanical Profile – Neoregelia purpurea

Family: Bromeliaceae
Genus: Neoregelia
Species: Neoregelia purpurea

Origin: Brazil (Atlantic rainforest)
Habitat: Epiphytic species growing on tree trunks and branches in warm, humid, shaded environments.

Description

Neoregelia purpurea var. compacta is a small to medium-sized bromeliad that forms a tight rosette of smooth, slightly arching leaves. The foliage is typically green with purple to reddish tones, especially when exposed to bright filtered light. The plant’s name “compacta” refers to its dense, compact growth form, making it ideal for limited spaces or terrariums.

When in bloom, the center of the rosette turns a vivid purple or magenta, contrasting beautifully with the outer leaves. Small, tubular lavender or blue flowers appear within the water-filled cup at the center.

Care and Cultivation

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight enhances color but excessive exposure can burn the leaves.
Temperature: Optimal range is 20–28 °C (68–82 °F). Protect from cold drafts below 15 °C (59 °F).
Humidity: Requires high humidity (above 60%) — perfect for terrariums or tropical setups.
Watering: Keep a small amount of clean water in the central cup, changing it regularly. Lightly moisten the substrate and allow it to dry slightly between waterings.
Substrate: Use a well-draining, airy mix such as orchid bark, sphagnum moss, perlite, and coco fiber.

Uses

Ornamental: Excellent for terrariums, vivariums, or tropical-themed interiors due to its compact size and colorful foliage.
Display suggestions: Looks beautiful mounted on cork bark or placed among ferns and mosses.
Maintenance: Easy to care for; thrives with warmth, humidity, and indirect light.
