Coleus scutellarioides ‘Abbey Road’
The species Coleus scutellarioides originates from tropical regions of Southeast Asia. ‘Abbey Road’ is a horticultural cultivar selected for its particularly vivid and contrasting ornamental foliage.
The foliage is soft, lightly velvety and finely serrated. Its leaves display a superb combination of vivid pink, deep red, purple and green. Colours become even more intense in bright, indirect light.
This plant has a bushy, branching growth habit. Its fast growth makes it easy to create a dense and colourful display. Regular pinching of the growing tips encourages a compact, fuller plant.
Coleus scutellarioides ‘Abbey Road’ appreciates bright indirect light, warm temperatures and a light substrate kept slightly moist. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, waterlogged soil and enclosed environments without airflow.
Coleus is best suited to open terrariums or large, well-ventilated vivariums. Prolonged stagnant humidity may lead to foliage problems.
Use a rich, light and well-draining substrate made from quality potting soil, coco fibre, mature compost, perlite and, if desired, a small amount of fine bark. The substrate should remain lightly moist but never waterlogged.
Keep the substrate lightly moist with regular watering. Allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings. Never leave standing water in a saucer or at the bottom of the pot.
Recommended humidity: 50% to 75%. Good ventilation remains essential, especially in greenhouses and terrarium setups.
Ideal growing temperature: 18°C to 28°C. Avoid temperatures below 12°C and cold drafts.
Fast growing. Approximate mature size: 30 to 60 cm in height, depending on pruning, growing conditions and container size.
Plant supplied in a [X cm] pot. Plant size and foliage colour intensity may vary according to season and availability.
Pinch the young shoots regularly to encourage branching. Remove damaged leaves and any flower spikes to promote lush foliage. Stem cuttings root easily in water or in a light, moist substrate.
This cultivar is perfect for bringing spectacular colour to a tropical plant collection. Its pink, red and purple foliage creates a beautiful contrast alongside ferns, Fittonias, Begonias and green-leaved tropical plants. An easy, vigorous and highly decorative choice.
