Family: Bromeliaceae
Genus: Neoregelia
Species: Neoregelia kautskyi
Origin: Endemic to Brazil (EspĂrito Santo region)
Habitat: Grows as an epiphyte on trees or rocks in tropical forests, where it enjoys bright, filtered light and high humidity.
Foliage: Forms a tight, symmetrical rosette with broad, glossy green leaves often tinged with reddish or pink hues toward the center. The leaf margins are finely serrated.
Size: Compact species — typically 10–20 cm (4–8 in) in diameter, perfect for terrariums or small displays.
Coloration: When grown in good light, the center develops deep red or magenta tones, especially before flowering.
Flowers: Small, lavender to bluish-purple blooms emerge from the central cup. The flowering period is subtle, but the foliage coloration intensifies during this stage.
Light: Bright, indirect light or partial shade. Strong light enhances coloration, while too little light keeps the leaves plain green.
Temperature: 20–28 °C (68–82 °F). Avoid exposure below 15 °C (59 °F).
Humidity: High humidity (>60%) is ideal — perfect for terrariums, greenhouses, or tropical plant setups.
Watering: Keep water in the central rosette (“tank”), changing it regularly to prevent stagnation. Water the substrate lightly and allow it to dry slightly between waterings.
Substrate: Use a loose, well-draining mix (orchid bark, sphagnum moss, perlite, and a bit of coco fiber).
Ornamental: Highly prized bromeliad for terrariums, vivariums, and tropical plant collections thanks to its compact form and vivid color contrast.
Display ideas: Looks stunning mounted on driftwood or nestled among ferns and mosses.
Maintenance: Low — thrives with humidity and filtered light.
