Begonia bowerae 'Tiger'
Begonia bowerae is native to Mexico, where it grows in humid, shaded tropical to subtropical environments.
The foliage is the main ornamental feature of 'Tiger'. Leaves are small to medium sized, asymmetrical, green and lightly velvety, with dark brown to nearly black markings concentrated along the veins and margins.
This strong colour contrast gives the plant an exceptionally graphic appearance.
Begonia bowerae 'Tiger' has a compact, slightly spreading growth habit perfectly suited to small and medium terrariums.
It gradually forms a dense low clump without quickly becoming too tall.
Use a light, humus-rich and free-draining mix containing coco fibre, perlite, fine bark and a small amount of sphagnum moss.
The growing medium should remain lightly moist while allowing good root aeration.
Keep the substrate consistently lightly moist without leaving it permanently saturated.
Avoid prolonged standing water and, where possible, water the substrate rather than keeping the foliage constantly wet.
Humidity of approximately 65% to 90% is particularly suitable.
Good airflow is recommended to prevent stagnant moisture around the foliage.
Ideal growing temperature: approximately 18°C to 26°C.
Avoid prolonged cold conditions and excessive heat combined with stagnant air.
Begonia bowerae 'Tiger' prefers soft to medium filtered light.
Overly intense light may fade or scorch the foliage, while adequate filtered light helps maintain strong contrasting patterns.
Moderate growth with a naturally compact and dense habit.
The plant may produce small, delicate flowers, generally pale pink to whitish, held above the foliage.
Flowering is secondary to the ornamental value of the leaves.
Propagation can be carried out easily from leaf or stem cuttings and by division.
Remove old or damaged foliage and lightly prune excessively long growth to maintain a compact shape.
Avoid keeping the foliage permanently wet in heavily misted terrariums.
Use a very weakly dosed tropical plant fertiliser occasionally during active growth.
Feeding should remain moderate, especially in small substrate volumes.
With green leaves marked by chocolate to almost black patterns, Begonia 'Tiger' immediately adds character to a tropical display.
Its compact size makes it ideal for foreground planting, where it contrasts beautifully with bright green mosses, small ferns and natural roots.
Place it in a lightly shaded section of the terrarium, at the base of a root or between rocky features. Its low profile and strongly patterned foliage create an eye-catching focal point without overwhelming the display.
