Hoya
Hoya, often known as wax plants or porcelain flowers, are tropical climbing, trailing or epiphytic plants highly appreciated for their decorative foliage and spectacular star-shaped flowers. Native mainly to tropical and subtropical Asia, Hoya species offer an impressive diversity of leaf shapes, textures and colours.
Easy to integrate into a tropical plant collection, Hoya can be grown on supports, branches, cork, moss poles or in hanging baskets. Some species are also very well suited to well-ventilated tropical terrariums, open paludariums and warm greenhouses.
Depending on the species, the foliage may be thick, glossy, textured, veined, variegated or almost succulent in appearance. Under suitable growing conditions and good light levels, many Hoya produce beautiful clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers, often delicately scented.
At JungleBox, we select a range of Hoya species and varieties suitable for tropical cultivation, both for collectors and for enthusiasts looking to create lush indoor displays or natural planted tropical environments.

Hoya generally prefer bright indirect light, a very airy and well-draining substrate and moderate watering. Allowing the substrate to dry slightly between waterings helps prevent excess moisture around the roots.
Most species grow well at temperatures between 18°C and 28°C and appreciate moderate to high humidity, generally around 50% to 80%, depending on the variety.
Their climbing or trailing growth habit makes Hoya particularly versatile. They can be grown:
- on moss or coco fibre poles;
- over natural branches and roots;
- on cork panels;
- in hanging baskets;
- on living walls;
- in paludariums;
- in large, well-ventilated tropical terrariums.
To encourage flowering, provide plenty of bright indirect light and avoid unnecessary repotting. After flowering, it is usually best to keep the old flower spurs, as many Hoya can bloom again from the same structures.
Growth rates vary depending on the species, from slow to moderate or fast. Each JungleBox product page provides specific growing recommendations for the selected Hoya variety.
