Rhaphidophora puberula 'Variegata' is a collector tropical climbing aroid valued for its green foliage irregularly variegated with cream to pale yellow. Its natural vining habit makes it ideal for quickly colonising roots, cork panels and humid vertical backgrounds.
Supplied in a Ø 6 cm pot, this young plant is particularly suitable for tropical terrariums where an unusual climbing species is required from a compact starting size.

Rhaphidophora puberula is native to Assam and western and southern Malesia, including Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra and the Lesser Sunda Islands. It naturally grows as a climber in wet tropical forests.
The leaves are green and lightly leathery, with irregular cream to pale yellow variegation in this horticultural form. The distribution of pale areas naturally varies from leaf to leaf.
As the plant matures, leaves may remain entire or develop a small number of characteristic perforations close to the midrib.
Rhaphidophora puberula is a robust climbing plant capable of producing relatively long stems. Its aerial roots allow it to gradually attach to vertical supports.
Climbing cultivation generally encourages more natural growth and the development of larger, more mature foliage.
Grow the plant against a natural root, cork panel, planted background, Hygrolon or moss-covered support.
A slightly humid surface encourages aerial root attachment and helps the plant spread naturally across the display.
Use a highly aerated and free-draining aroid mix containing coco chips, fine bark, perlite, sphagnum moss and light organic material.
The substrate should remain lightly moist without staying permanently waterlogged.
Keep the substrate consistently lightly moist while allowing the surface to begin drying between waterings.
Avoid prolonged standing water around the roots.
Humidity of approximately 65% to 90% is particularly suitable.
Good airflow remains important, especially in heavily misted terrariums.
Ideal growing temperature: approximately 20°C to 28°C.
Avoid prolonged cold conditions.
Rhaphidophora puberula 'Variegata' prefers medium to bright filtered light.
Good lighting encourages compact growth and highlights the variegation. Cream and yellow areas contain less chlorophyll and are therefore more sensitive to harsh direct sunlight.
Moderate to fast growth under warm and humid conditions with a suitable vertical support.
Stems can be pruned as required to control development within the terrarium.
Mature Rhaphidophora puberula can produce typical aroid inflorescences consisting of a spathe and spadix.
In cultivation, however, the main ornamental interest remains its foliage and climbing habit.
Propagation is mainly carried out from stem cuttings containing at least one node and ideally an aerial root.
Train young shoots onto their support and prune overly long stems to keep growth suitable for the size of the enclosure.
Remove old or damaged foliage when necessary.
Use a low-strength tropical plant or aroid fertiliser occasionally during active growth.
Avoid excessive feeding, particularly in small substrate volumes.
This Rhaphidophora combines a naturally climbing habit with bright variegated foliage. As it grows up a root or vertical background, it can gradually transform the rear of the terrarium into a living green wall.
Its young 6 cm pot size makes it easy to position precisely when creating a new display and guide its growth exactly where required.
Place Rhaphidophora puberula 'Variegata' at the base of a vertical root or cork panel and gently guide the first shoots onto the support. Consistent humidity around the aerial roots will encourage attachment and stronger climbing growth.
Like many Araceae, this plant contains calcium oxalate crystals. The sap may be irritating and the plant should not be ingested.
