Description

Scindapsus pictus 'Mayari', commonly sold as Scindapsus 'Mayari Variegata', is a highly sought-after tropical climbing aroid valued for its spectacular foliage combining deep green, metallic silver and irregular white variegation.

Every leaf develops a unique pattern, ranging from small white sectors to heavily variegated foliage. This constantly changing pattern makes 'Mayari' a particularly attractive collector plant.

The plant is supplied in a 10.5 cm diameter pot, an ideal size for tropical terrariums, paludariums or for establishing a climbing plant on roots, cork or planted backgrounds.

Foliage

The leaves are ovate to slightly heart-shaped, thick, matte and lightly textured. They retain the characteristic silver markings of Scindapsus pictus while displaying additional areas of white variegation.

Variegation may appear as marbling, splashes, stripes or large white sectors, meaning every new leaf can develop a different pattern.

Growth habit and development

Scindapsus pictus 'Mayari' is a climbing and epiphytic plant. Its stems develop aerial roots that allow it to gradually attach to trunks, roots, cork panels and other vertical supports.

It can also be grown as a trailing plant, although climbing generally encourages a more natural habit and larger foliage.

Recommended support

This plant performs particularly well on vertical supports such as roots, cork panels, planted walls, Hygrolon or moss-covered backgrounds.

Under humid conditions, its aerial roots can gradually attach to the support and allow the plant to spread across the display.

Recommended substrate

Use a light, highly aerated and free-draining mix containing coco chips, fine bark, perlite, sphagnum moss and light organic material.

The substrate should retain light moisture without remaining permanently waterlogged.

Watering

Keep the substrate lightly moist and allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings.

Soft or low-mineral water is preferable, and prolonged standing water around the roots should be avoided.

Humidity

Humidity of approximately 65% to 90% is particularly suitable.

Good airflow remains important to maintain healthy foliage and reduce the risk of rot.

Temperature

Ideal growing temperature: approximately 20°C to 28°C.

Avoid prolonged cold conditions and cold draughts.

Light

Scindapsus pictus 'Mayari' prefers medium to bright filtered light.

Good lighting encourages compact growth and helps maintain visible variegation. Heavily white areas contain little chlorophyll and are naturally more delicate than green portions.

Growth

Moderate growth. The plant gradually produces new foliage along its stems and generally grows more vigorously when provided with a climbing support.

Flowering

Flowering is very uncommon in cultivation and is not the main ornamental feature. Scindapsus 'Mayari' is primarily grown for its exceptional foliage.

Propagation

Propagation is easily carried out from stem cuttings containing at least one node.

Maintenance

Pruning overly long stems encourages branching and helps maintain a denser growth habit.

If the plant produces many almost completely white leaves, maintaining enough green foliage is important for efficient photosynthesis.

Fertilisation

Use a very weakly dosed tropical plant or aroid fertiliser occasionally during active growth.

Avoid excessive feeding, especially in terrariums.

Why choose Scindapsus pictus 'Mayari'?

'Mayari' combines three striking colours: deep green, metallic silver and pure white. Each new leaf can develop a different pattern, making every plant visually unique.

Its climbing habit also makes it particularly useful for covering natural roots, vertical structures and tropical terrarium backgrounds.

JungleBox advice

Place your Scindapsus 'Mayari' against a natural root, cork panel or slightly moist planted background to encourage its aerial roots to attach.

Bright filtered light and high humidity will help maintain attractive foliage while supporting healthy growth.
