Description

Sedum makinoi ‘Tornado’ is a small perennial succulent appreciated for its compact, dense and trailing growth habit. Its numerous small, fleshy, rounded and glossy green leaves develop on flexible stems that gradually form a highly decorative cushion. Easy to grow and space-saving, this cultivar is particularly suitable for succulent arrangements, miniature rock gardens, hanging pots and bright, relatively dry planted displays.

Botanical family

Crassulaceae

Genus

Sedum

Species / Cultivar

Sedum makinoi Maxim. ‘Tornado’

Origin

Sedum makinoi is native to East Asia. Its natural range includes Japan, South Korea and parts of China, including Anhui, Zhejiang and Guangxi.

The species mainly occurs in the temperate biome. The cultivar ‘Tornado’ is a horticultural selection and therefore has no natural distribution of its own. It nevertheless retains the main characteristics of the species, particularly its creeping growth habit and preference for well-draining substrates.

Foliage

The foliage of Sedum makinoi ‘Tornado’ consists of numerous small, rounded, thick and slightly succulent leaves. Their colour is generally bright to glossy green, creating a very decorative contrast with the fine creeping stems.

The dense arrangement of the leaves gives the cultivar ‘Tornado’ its characteristic compact and full appearance.

Flowering

Sedum makinoi may produce small star-shaped flowers during the growing season, typical of the genus Sedum. They appear above the foliage and add further ornamental interest.

Flowering depends mainly on plant maturity, light levels and seasonal growing conditions.

Growth habit and development

Sedum makinoi ‘Tornado’ has a naturally creeping and trailing growth habit. Its stems spread horizontally before cascading over the edge of the container.

It gradually forms a compact and dense mat. This low-growing habit makes it suitable as a miniature groundcover or as a trailing plant over rocks, branches or raised containers.

Cultivation

Sedum makinoi ‘Tornado’ prefers bright light and can tolerate several hours of gentle direct sunlight once properly acclimatised. Indoors or in a greenhouse, bright filtered light is particularly suitable.

Insufficient light usually causes stem elongation and a loss of the compact habit characteristic of this cultivar.

Terrarium compatibility

  • Humid tropical terrarium: Not recommended
  • Bright temperate terrarium: Yes
  • Dry to moderately humid terrarium: Yes
  • Paludarium: Not recommended near the water zone
  • Very humid tropical vivarium: Not recommended
  • Nano terrarium: Yes, if bright and well ventilated
  • Indoor cultivation: Yes

Sedum makinoi ‘Tornado’ is not a tropical rainforest plant. It is better suited to bright, well-ventilated and relatively dry terrariums where the substrate is allowed to dry between waterings.

A constantly saturated atmosphere combined with permanently wet substrate greatly increases the risk of root and stem rot.

Recommended substrate

Use a highly draining and well-aerated substrate. A mixture of light potting soil with perlite, pumice, coarse sand or other mineral components is particularly suitable.

Drainage is essential: excess water should be able to leave the substrate quickly after every watering.

Watering

Water when the substrate has started to dry. During the active growing season, watering can be regular but should always be spaced sufficiently to avoid permanent moisture around the roots.

In winter or whenever growth slows, reduce watering significantly. Never allow stagnant water to remain in the saucer or outer pot.

Humidity

Sedum makinoi ‘Tornado’ does not require high atmospheric humidity. A relative humidity of approximately 40% to 65% is suitable in most growing situations.

Good air circulation is especially important when the plant is grown in a terrarium.

Temperature

For indoor cultivation, temperatures between 15°C and 25°C are suitable. The plant may also benefit from slightly cooler conditions during winter.

For the cultivar ‘Tornado’, prolonged frost should be avoided. Container-grown plants are best protected during periods of severe winter cold.

Growth

Growth is relatively fast under good light. The stems gradually extend and form a dense mat of small fleshy leaves.

The plant remains low-growing and compact but can spread over several dozen centimetres.

Current size

The plant is supplied in the format and pot diameter indicated in the product specifications. Its height, stem length and foliage density may naturally vary depending on the season and current stock.

Maintenance

Sedum makinoi ‘Tornado’ requires very little maintenance. Simply remove dry or damaged stems and lightly trim excessively long sections if you wish to maintain a compact shape.

Light pruning also encourages branching and helps create a denser cushion.

Fertilisation

Apply a fertiliser for succulents or cacti at low concentration approximately once a month during the active growing season.

Heavy fertilisation is unnecessary and may encourage softer, less compact growth.

Propagation

Sedum makinoi ‘Tornado’ is very easy to propagate from stem cuttings. Take a healthy section, optionally allow the cut end to dry briefly, then place it in a light and well-draining substrate.

The stems can quickly produce new roots when kept under suitable light and temperature conditions.

Toxicity

Sedum makinoi ‘Tornado’ is mainly cultivated as an ornamental plant and is not intended for consumption. As a precaution, ingestion by young children or pets should be avoided.

Why choose Sedum makinoi ‘Tornado’?

Sedum makinoi ‘Tornado’ is an excellent plant for quickly creating a dense planted effect in bright displays. Its miniature succulent foliage, creeping habit and compact growth make it easy to create small groundcovers or cascading effects.

Its easy cultivation and small size also make it an excellent choice for succulent arrangements, small containers and dry or temperate terrariums with good ventilation.

JungleBox advice

Place your Sedum makinoi ‘Tornado’ in a very bright location and always use a highly draining substrate. Allow the mixture to dry partially between waterings to protect the root system.

In a terrarium, choose a bright and well-ventilated environment rather than a saturated tropical setup. It can also be positioned on an elevated or rocky area so that the stems trail naturally.
