Selaginella uncinata, commonly known as the peacock fern, blue spikemoss, or iridescent Selaginella, is a striking and unusual plant from the group of lycophytes—primitive vascular plants related to ferns.
Foliage: Its delicate, finely divided leaves display vivid blue-green iridescence that changes with the angle of the light, giving it a metallic or shimmering effect.
Growth habit: It has a low-growing, creeping or spreading form, making it ideal as a ground cover in humid environments or as a terrarium plant.
Natural habitat: Native to tropical regions of Asia (like China and Vietnam), it thrives in the shaded, moist undergrowth of forests.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Humidity: High humidity is essential—this plant loves moist air, making it perfect for terrariums or humid greenhouses.
Temperature: Ideally between 65–75°F (18–24°C). It does not tolerate cold or frost.
Soil: Needs a light, well-draining, slightly acidic substrate rich in organic matter.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging. Do not let the soil dry out completely.
It is sometimes confused with Selaginella willdenowii, another iridescent species.
This plant struggles in dry indoor air, especially in winter. It's best kept in a closed terrarium or under a humidity dome if grown indoors.
