Description

Biophytum zenkeri is a small tropical plant from the Oxalidaceae family, appreciated for its miniature palm-like or fern-like appearance. Its compound leaves form elegant rosettes at the top of slender stems, giving the plant a light and highly natural look. Its compact growth and preference for warm, humid environments make it an excellent choice for tropical terrariums, paludariums and naturalistic planted displays.

Botanical family

Oxalidaceae

Genus

Biophytum

Species / Cultivar

Biophytum zenkeri Guillaumin

Origin

Biophytum zenkeri is native to tropical western and central Africa. Its natural range extends from southern Nigeria to northwestern Angola, including Cameroon, Gabon, Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In its natural habitat, this species mainly grows in humid tropical environments with warm temperatures, high atmospheric humidity and filtered light beneath surrounding vegetation.

Foliage

The foliage of Biophytum zenkeri consists of numerous small leaflets arranged regularly on either side of a central axis. The overall leaf is pinnate, light and elegant, giving the plant the appearance of a miniature palm.

New leaves gradually emerge from the top of the stems, forming a small and highly decorative crown of foliage.

Leaf movement

Like several species in the genus Biophytum, this plant can alter the position of its leaflets according to light levels and the day-night cycle. The leaflets may partially fold when light levels decrease.

This behaviour adds further interest to this lively and unusual tropical plant.

Flowering

Biophytum zenkeri may produce small, delicate flowers carried on slender flower stalks. The flowering is discreet compared with the foliage but provides an additional ornamental feature when the plant is grown under suitable conditions.

Growth habit and development

Biophytum zenkeri has an upright and compact growth habit. Its fine stems carry rosettes of compound leaves, giving the plant its characteristic miniature silhouette.

Its limited size allows it to be easily combined with mosses, miniature ferns, Fittonia, Selaginella and other small tropical plants in naturalistic displays.

Cultivation

Biophytum zenkeri prefers bright filtered light, warm and relatively stable temperatures and high atmospheric humidity. Avoid intense direct sunlight, which may quickly dry or scorch the delicate leaflets.

This species performs best in stable tropical conditions and does not tolerate prolonged drought well.

Terrarium compatibility

  • Humid tropical terrarium: Yes, highly recommended
  • Paludarium: Yes, planted above the water zone
  • Tropical vivarium: Yes
  • Nano terrarium: Yes
  • Indoor cultivation: Yes, with sufficient humidity

Biophytum zenkeri is particularly well suited to planted tropical terrariums thanks to its small size and miniature appearance. It can be positioned in the foreground or middle of a composition to add height without taking up much space.

Recommended substrate

Use a light, organic-rich and well-draining tropical substrate composed of materials such as coco fibre, organic compost, perlite, sphagnum moss and fine bark.

The substrate should retain regular moisture without remaining permanently saturated.

Watering

Keep the substrate slightly moist and avoid allowing the root ball to dry out completely. Water regularly without creating stagnant water around the roots.

Soft, filtered, reverse-osmosis or low-mineral water is preferable.

Humidity

Biophytum zenkeri prefers a humidity level between 70% and 90%. High atmospheric humidity promotes healthy new growth and helps keep the delicate leaflets supple and well formed.

Light air circulation is nevertheless recommended to prevent permanent condensation on the foliage.

Temperature

Ideal growing temperature: 20°C to 27°C. Avoid prolonged temperatures below approximately 16°C, cold draughts and sudden temperature fluctuations.

Growth

Growth is moderate. Biophytum zenkeri remains a relatively compact plant and is particularly well suited to small tropical growing spaces.

Its final size depends mainly on light, humidity, temperature and overall growing conditions.

Current size

The plant is supplied in the format and pot diameter indicated in the product specifications. Its height, number of leaves and foliage density may naturally vary depending on the season and current stock.

Maintenance

Gently remove old, yellowing or damaged leaves. Because the stems and leaflets are relatively delicate, handle the plant carefully during installation and maintenance.

Avoid placing Biophytum zenkeri directly beneath a powerful misting nozzle, as strong water pressure may damage its delicate foliage.

Fertilisation

Apply a balanced tropical plant fertiliser at low concentration every three to four weeks during the active growing season.

Avoid strong fertilisation, as this small plant has a relatively fine root system and may be sensitive to excessive mineral salt accumulation.

Propagation

Biophytum zenkeri is mainly propagated by seed. Seeds may be sown on a fine, moist substrate and kept in warm, highly humid conditions.

Soft light and stable temperatures encourage healthy development of young seedlings.

Toxicity

Biophytum zenkeri is not generally cultivated as an edible plant. As a precaution, ingestion should be avoided and the plant should be kept out of reach of young children and animals likely to consume it.

Why choose Biophytum zenkeri?

Biophytum zenkeri is an excellent plant for creating a natural miniature tropical landscape. Its pinnate foliage, small palm-like silhouette and compact growth immediately add an exotic touch to planted terrariums.

Its small size also makes it easy to combine with mosses, miniature ferns, Selaginella, Fittonia and other tropical understory plants.

JungleBox advice

Place your Biophytum zenkeri in a bright area protected from direct sunlight. Maintain high humidity and keep the substrate slightly moist at all times without saturating it.

In a tropical terrarium, position it in the foreground or middle layer among mosses and small understory plants. Its miniature upright habit will quickly add height and a highly natural appearance to the composition.
