Description

Philodendron ‘Mars’ is a tropical plant sought after for its broad, strongly veined and highly ornamental foliage. Its young leaves may display orange, copper or bronze shades before gradually turning deep green. Its exotic appearance and dense growth habit make it an ideal variety for creating a lush tropical atmosphere indoors, in a heated greenhouse or in a large planted terrarium.

Botanical family

Araceae

Genus

Philodendron

Species / Cultivar

Philodendron ‘Mars’

Origin

Philodendron ‘Mars’ is a horticultural cultivar belonging to the genus Philodendron, which originates from the tropical regions of Central and South America. The species from which cultivated Philodendrons are derived naturally grow in humid tropical forests, under filtered light and in a warm atmosphere.

Foliage

The foliage of Philodendron ‘Mars’ has a veined, slightly textured and glossy surface that is particularly decorative. Its broad leaves generally display bronze, copper or orange tones when emerging, before gradually turning dark green as they mature. Colour intensity may vary depending on light levels, humidity and growing conditions.

Growth habit and development

This plant has a compact, upright and bushy growth habit. Unlike climbing Philodendrons, it gradually forms a dense clump of leaves arranged around a central stem. Its moderate growth makes it suitable for cultivation in pots, tropical greenhouses or large planted environments.

Cultivation

Philodendron ‘Mars’ prefers bright indirect or filtered light, moderate to high humidity and an airy, well-draining substrate that remains slightly moist. Avoid intense direct sunlight, waterlogged conditions and prolonged periods of drought.

Terrarium compatibility

  • Humid tropical terrarium: Yes, large enclosure
  • Paludarium: Yes
  • Tropical vivarium: Yes
  • Nano terrarium: No
  • Indoor cultivation: Yes

Thanks to its preference for warm and humid conditions, this plant can be used in large terrariums or paludariums. However, it requires sufficient space and occasional pruning to control its size.

Recommended substrate

An airy and well-draining substrate composed of coco fibre, fine pine bark, perlite, sphagnum moss and organic matter will promote healthy growth and strong root development. The mixture should retain slight moisture while allowing excess water to drain away quickly.

Watering

Keep the substrate slightly moist with regular watering using low-mineral or soft water. Allow the surface of the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid stagnant water and excessive moisture around the roots to reduce the risk of root rot.

Humidity

This plant prefers a humidity level between 60% and 80%, especially when cultivated in a tropical environment. It can nevertheless adapt to normal indoor humidity, provided the air does not remain excessively dry for long periods.

Temperature

Ideal growing temperature: 20°C to 28°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C, cold draughts and sudden temperature fluctuations.

Growth

Moderate growth. Approximate mature size: 60 to 100 cm, depending on growing conditions, plant age and available space.

Current size

Plant supplied in the pot size indicated in the product specifications. The overall size, number of leaves and colour intensity may vary depending on the season and current stock.

Maintenance

Regularly remove old or damaged leaves and gently clean the foliage with a damp cloth. Maintain good ventilation in terrariums and greenhouses to prevent excessive stagnant humidity. Repot the plant when the roots have fully colonised the container.

Why choose Philodendron ‘Mars’?

This variety is particularly valued for the changing colour of its foliage, its warm-toned young leaves and its compact growth habit. It is an original and graphic tropical plant, ideal for enriching a Philodendron collection or creating a lush planted display.
