Alocasia melo is a collectible tropical Aroid highly valued for its thick, rigid and strongly textured foliage. Its grey-green to dark green leaves have a deeply quilted, almost mineral-like surface, giving the plant a highly graphic and distinctive appearance. Its compact growth habit and spectacular foliage make it an excellent choice for Alocasia collections, tropical greenhouses and suitably sized humid terrariums.

Alocasia melo is native to Borneo, where it naturally grows in humid tropical forests, particularly in rocky and limestone environments. It develops in warm, humid and shaded habitats with filtered light beneath the forest canopy.
The foliage is the main attraction of Alocasia melo. Its leaves are thick, firm and almost leathery, with a strongly veined and deeply quilted surface. Their colour ranges from grey-green to dark green, sometimes showing slightly bluish tones depending on the light.
This unusual texture gives the plant a sculptural and mineral appearance, clearly distinguishing it from Alocasia species with thinner or velvety foliage.
Alocasia melo has a compact and upright growth habit. Its leaves emerge from a short rhizome and gradually form a dense clump. It generally remains smaller than many other Alocasia species, making it suitable for more limited growing spaces.
Alocasia melo prefers bright indirect light, warm stable temperatures and relatively high humidity. Avoid intense direct sunlight, which may cause leaf scorch.
This species particularly appreciates a very well-draining substrate and excellent root aeration.
Thanks to its compact habit and preference for atmospheric humidity, Alocasia melo can adapt very well to a properly ventilated tropical terrarium.
However, the substrate should never remain permanently waterlogged, even in a very humid environment.
Use a highly aerated and well-draining substrate composed of pine bark, coco chips, perlite, pumice, sphagnum moss and a small amount of organic matter.
A specialised Aroid substrate is particularly suitable. The mixture should allow excess water to drain quickly while maintaining slight moisture around the roots.
Water regularly but moderately, allowing the upper layer of the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Soft, filtered or low-mineral water is preferable.
Avoid stagnant water in the outer pot or saucer, as the root system is sensitive to prolonged excess moisture.
Alocasia melo prefers a humidity level between 60% and 80%. Higher atmospheric humidity encourages healthy foliage development and helps prevent dry leaf edges.
Good ventilation remains essential to maintain healthy foliage.
Ideal growing temperature: 20°C to 28°C. Avoid prolonged temperatures below approximately 16°C as well as cold draughts.
Growth is slow to moderate. Alocasia melo remains relatively compact and generally reaches approximately 30 to 50 cm in height under cultivation, depending on growing conditions.
Growth may slow during cooler periods or when light levels decrease.
The plant is supplied in the format and pot diameter indicated in the product specifications. Its height, number of leaves and foliage colour may naturally vary depending on the season and current stock.
Remove old, yellowing or damaged leaves using a clean and disinfected cutting tool. Gently clean the foliage when necessary to remove dust without damaging its strongly textured surface.
Avoid constantly spraying water directly onto the leaves, especially when ventilation is limited.
Apply a balanced fertiliser for tropical plants or Aroids every three to four weeks during the active growing season.
Use a moderate concentration to reduce the risk of root burn and excessive mineral salt accumulation in the substrate.
Propagation is mainly carried out by dividing the rhizome or separating offsets and small corms produced by the mother plant.
Young plants should be kept in a warm, bright environment without direct sunlight and with relatively high humidity until a sufficiently strong root system develops.
Like other Alocasia species, Alocasia melo contains calcium oxalate crystals. All parts of the plant should be considered non-edible.
Keep it out of reach of young children and animals likely to chew the foliage.
Alocasia melo is a remarkable collectible plant distinguished by the unique texture of its foliage. Its thick, deeply quilted and almost mineral-looking leaves create a striking contrast among other tropical plants.
Its compact growth habit also makes it an excellent choice for Alocasia enthusiasts with limited space or for highly graphic tropical terrarium displays.
Grow your Alocasia melo in a highly draining substrate and avoid excess watering. High humidity combined with good airflow and bright indirect light will promote dense, compact and strongly textured foliage.
This species particularly appreciates mineral-rich, highly aerated substrates with excellent oxygenation around the roots.
