Description

Alocasia reginula ‘Ninja’ is a collectible tropical Aroid appreciated for its extremely dark, velvety foliage highlighted by contrasting silver to whitish veins. Compact and highly graphic, this variety belongs to the group commonly known as “Jewel Alocasia”. Origin

Alocasia reginula is native to Borneo, where it is associated with humid tropical forests and well-drained limestone habitats. The horticultural form ‘Ninja’ has been selected for its particularly dark, compact and strongly veined foliage.

It is visually close to the well-known Alocasia reginula ‘Black Velvet’, but ‘Ninja’ generally develops rounder, thicker and more strongly textured leaves, together with a distinctive pale double marginal vein.

The foliage of Alocasia reginula ‘Ninja’ consists of thick, oval to slightly heart-shaped leaves with a velvety dark green surface that may appear almost black under certain lighting conditions.

The silver to creamy-white veins contrast strongly with the dark leaf blade. The presence of a pale double vein near the leaf margin is one of the most distinctive characteristics of this cultivar.

Growth habit and development

Alocasia ‘Ninja’ has a compact and upright growth habit. The leaves are carried on relatively short petioles emerging from a central rhizome and gradually form a dense clump.

Recommended substrate

Use a highly aerated and well-draining substrate composed of materials such as pine bark, coco chips, perlite, pumice, sphagnum moss and a small amount of organic matter.

A specialised Aroid substrate is particularly suitable. The mixture should retain slight moisture while allowing excellent airflow around the root system.

Watering

Water moderately when the upper layer of the substrate begins to dry. Keep the mixture slightly moist without allowing it to remain permanently saturated.

Alocasia reginula ‘Ninja’ is particularly sensitive to excessive watering. Avoid stagnant water in the outer pot or saucer and use soft, filtered or low-mineral water whenever possible.

Humidity

This variety prefers a humidity level between 60% and 80%. Sufficient atmospheric humidity promotes healthy development of new leaves and helps prevent dry leaf margins.
