Begonia maculata is native to south-eastern Brazil, particularly the Rio de Janeiro region, where it naturally occurs in humid tropical environments.
The leaves are asymmetrical, elongated and slightly wavy. Their upper surface is deep green and decorated with numerous silver markings that appear almost hand-painted.
The underside develops dark red to purple tones, creating a striking contrast with the upper surface.
The form sold as 'Silver Spot' is particularly valued for the visual impact of its silver markings and strongly contrasted foliage.
The size, density and arrangement of the spots may naturally vary from one leaf to another.
Begonia maculata belongs to the cane-type Begonia group. As it matures, it develops upright stems carrying successive leaves.
Juvenile plants remain compact, while mature specimens can become considerably taller and may benefit from light support.
Use a light, humus-rich and highly free-draining substrate that retains gentle moisture while remaining well aerated.
A mix containing coco humus or fibre, perlite, fine bark and a small amount of sphagnum moss works particularly well.
Keep the substrate lightly moist during active growth, allowing the surface to begin drying between waterings.
Begonia maculata does not tolerate permanently waterlogged growing media, which may encourage root and stem rot.
Humidity of approximately 60% to 80% is particularly suitable.
Humid air supports attractive foliage, although good airflow remains important, especially in enclosed terrariums.
Ideal growing temperature: approximately 18°C to 26°C.
Avoid prolonged cold conditions and cool draughts.
Begonia maculata 'Silver Spot' prefers bright filtered light.
Good lighting encourages compact growth and strongly contrasted foliage. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which may quickly scorch the leaves.
Moderate to fast growth under warm, bright and humid conditions.
The plant can regularly produce new foliage and progressively extend its upright stems.
Begonia maculata may produce hanging clusters of small white to pale pink flowers.
Flowering adds another ornamental feature, although the spectacular spotted foliage remains the main attraction.
Propagation is relatively straightforward from stem cuttings containing several viable nodes.
Remove old or damaged leaves and occasionally prune overly long stems to encourage a fuller, more branched plant.
Avoid keeping the foliage permanently wet, especially where airflow is limited.
Use a balanced low-strength tropical plant fertiliser during active growth.
Light regular feeding is preferable to highly concentrated applications.
Its foliage looks almost like a constellation: a deep green background scattered with silver spots, revealing a rich red underside whenever the leaves move.
Supplied in a 6 cm pot, this young Begonia instantly adds contrast to tropical displays while offering the pleasure of watching it develop into a much more architectural plant.
In a terrarium, place it in a bright position protected from direct misting. The silver markings look especially striking against dark cork, natural roots or shaded backgrounds.
