Biophytum sensitivum

Biophytum sensitivum is a fascinating miniature tropical plant belonging to the Biophytum genus, often nicknamed the “mini sensitive plant” due to its ability to fold its leaflets in response to touch or environmental changes.

Native to tropical regions of Asia and Africa, it naturally grows in warm, humid, and shaded environments such as forest floors rich in organic matter.

Its most striking feature is its rapid movement: the leaflets close when touched or at night, a phenomenon known as nyctinasty. This gives the plant a highly dynamic and interactive character uncommon in small tropical species. It forms a compact rosette of fine, palm-like leaves, creating a delicate ornamental appearance.

Typically reaching 10–20 cm in height, Biophytum sensitivum thrives in bright indirect light, high humidity, and a consistently lightly moist but well-draining substrate. It is particularly well suited for tropical terrariums or very humid indoor environments.
