Fittonia verschaffeltii is native to humid tropical forests of South America, where it naturally grows close to the ground under dense vegetation and filtered light.
The foliage is the main ornamental feature of this cultivar. The leaves are small, soft and highly graphic, marked by a contrasting network of veins across the leaf blade.
This strong visual texture makes it ideal for creating contrast in planted terrariums.
Fittonia 'Joly Josan' has a low, compact and slightly creeping growth habit.
It gradually spreads across the substrate and can form a dense carpet under warm, humid conditions.
Use a light, humus-rich and free-draining mix containing coco fibre, light organic compost, perlite and a small amount of sphagnum moss.
The growing medium should remain lightly moist without becoming waterlogged.
Maintain consistent moisture in the substrate.
Fittonia does not tolerate prolonged drying well and may quickly lose turgidity when the substrate becomes too dry.
Humidity of approximately 70% to 90% is particularly suitable.
This species thrives in humid environments, which explains its excellent adaptation to terrarium culture.
Ideal growing temperature: approximately 20°C to 26°C.
Avoid prolonged cold conditions and cool draughts.
Fittonia 'Joly Josan' prefers soft to medium filtered light.
Avoid intense direct sunlight, which may scorch or fade the foliage.
Moderate to fast growth under warm, humid and well-lit conditions.
The plant may produce small inconspicuous flower spikes, although its main ornamental value is its striking foliage.
Propagation is very easy from stem cuttings containing several nodes.
Regular pinching or pruning helps maintain a dense, compact shape.
Remove old or damaged leaves to keep the plant neat and evenly filled.
Use a very weakly dosed tropical plant fertiliser during active growth.
Avoid excessive feeding, especially in small substrate volumes.
Compact, colourful and easy to place, this Fittonia is ideal for adding fine detail and contrast to the foreground of a tropical terrarium.
Its strongly veined foliage instantly creates the appearance of a lush, mature forest floor, even in small enclosures.
Place Fittonia 'Joly Josan' in a lightly shaded, humid foreground position. Combine it with mosses, Selaginella, small ferns or bromeliads for a natural tropical forest-floor effect.
