Alocasia 'Venom' is a spectacular collector tropical aroid recognised for its dark, strongly veined and highly sculptural foliage. Its most distinctive feature is the unusual shape of its leaves, which end in an exceptionally long, narrow tip that may twist or curl slightly.
As the plant matures, this dramatic silhouette becomes increasingly pronounced, giving 'Venom' a highly unusual appearance compared with more conventional Alocasia cultivars.

Alocasia 'Venom'
Alocasia 'Venom' is a horticultural cultivar associated with the Alocasia × amazonica lineage. It was selected from a mutation appearing in cultivation and developed for its exceptionally distinctive leaf shape.
The leaves are sagittate to elongated, with dark green to almost black foliage depending on growing conditions.
Pale contrasting veins stand out clearly against the dark leaf blade, enhancing its dramatic appearance.
The signature feature of Alocasia 'Venom' is the unusually elongated tip of each leaf.
As the plant matures, this narrow extension may become slightly wavy, twisted or curved, producing a highly sculptural appearance.
Alocasia 'Venom' has an upright, compact to intermediate growth habit. New leaves emerge from the base and gradually increase in size as the plant develops.
Juvenile specimens may initially look less dramatic, with the characteristic Venom leaf shape becoming increasingly pronounced with maturity.
Use a highly aerated and free-draining aroid mix containing coco chips, fine bark, perlite, sphagnum moss and light organic material.
The growing medium should remain lightly moist while providing excellent root aeration.
Water when the upper layer of substrate begins to dry slightly.
Avoid excessive watering and permanently saturated substrates. Alocasia 'Venom' appreciates consistent moisture but requires good oxygen around the roots.
Humidity of approximately 65% to 85% is particularly suitable.
Higher humidity assists new leaf expansion but should always be combined with adequate airflow.
Ideal growing temperature: approximately 20°C to 28°C.
Avoid prolonged temperatures below 18°C and cold draughts.
Alocasia 'Venom' prefers bright filtered light.
Good lighting encourages compact growth, dark foliage and strong vein contrast. Avoid harsh direct sunlight.
Moderate growth. New leaves gradually become larger and may display increasingly exaggerated leaf tips as the plant matures.
Mature Alocasia 'Venom' may produce typical aroid inflorescences consisting of a spathe surrounding a spadix.
In cultivation, however, its main ornamental value remains its dramatic foliage.
Propagation is mainly carried out by separating offsets or small corms produced around the root system.
Remove older leaves as they naturally yellow and maintain good airflow around the plant.
Avoid allowing water to remain stagnant around the crown.
Use a balanced low-strength tropical plant or aroid fertiliser during active growth.
Avoid excessive feeding and mineral salt accumulation in the substrate.
Alocasia 'Venom' does not rely on dramatic variegation for its appeal: its uniqueness comes from the architecture of the foliage itself. Dark leaves, contrasting veins and an exaggerated elongated tip create an instantly recognisable silhouette.
The characteristic form becomes increasingly pronounced as the plant matures, making it a striking collector piece for aroid enthusiasts.
Provide bright filtered light, warm conditions and a highly aerated substrate. Do not worry if a juvenile plant initially produces fairly conventional leaves: the dramatic Venom shape becomes more pronounced with maturity.
Like other Araceae, Alocasia 'Venom' contains calcium oxalate crystals. The sap may be irritating and the plant should not be ingested.
