Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’
Hoya carnosa is native to tropical and eastern Asia. The cultivar ‘Compacta’ is a horticultural form selected for its strongly curled foliage and compact trailing habit.
The leaves are thick, leathery and slightly succulent. They have a very characteristic shape, strongly twisted and folded onto themselves. Their coloration generally ranges from medium to dark green, while their dense arrangement along the stems creates a highly graphic appearance.
Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’ can produce beautiful rounded umbels made up of numerous small star-shaped flowers. The blooms are usually pale pink to pinkish white with a deeper colored center and may release a sweet fragrance, particularly in the evening.
This variety has a mainly trailing growth habit and gradually develops long, thick stems. Its growth is relatively slow, but well-established specimens can eventually form impressive cascading displays.
Place the plant in bright indirect light. Good light levels encourage compact growth and improve flowering potential. Gentle morning or evening sun can be beneficial, but avoid intense direct sunlight during the hottest hours.
Allow a significant portion of the substrate to dry between waterings. Thanks to its thick, fleshy leaves, Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’ tolerates slight dryness better than excessive moisture. Avoid standing water around the roots.
Moderate to high humidity is suitable for this plant. Levels around 50 to 70% support healthy growth, provided there is sufficient air circulation.
Maintain temperatures between 18 and 28°C whenever possible. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect the plant from cold drafts.
Use a very light, airy and well-draining substrate. A mixture containing fine bark, coco chips or fiber, perlite and a small amount of sphagnum moss provides excellent root aeration while retaining enough moisture.
Due to its trailing habit and gradual development, Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’ can be used in very large open tropical terrariums or particularly well-ventilated enclosures. However, it is generally better suited to hanging baskets or pots in a bright tropical indoor environment.
This variety requires little maintenance. Remove dry leaves when necessary and avoid unnecessarily cutting old flower peduncles, as Hoya can bloom repeatedly from the same structures. Its compact foliage can trap dust and debris, so occasional gentle cleaning is recommended.
To encourage flowering on your Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’, provide plenty of bright indirect light and avoid repotting too frequently. Hoya often flower more readily when well established in a pot that is only slightly larger than their root system.
Like many Hoya, this plant produces a white latex-like sap when cut. Avoid contact with the eyes and mouth and wash your hands after significant pruning.
