Description

Hoya carnosa is a tropical climbing and epiphytic plant highly appreciated for its thick, glossy and decorative foliage. Robust and elegant, it is well suited to tropical indoor cultivation, warm greenhouses, open paludariums and large, well-ventilated terrariums. Its climbing or trailing habit makes it ideal for creating a natural and lush planted environment.

Botanical family

Apocynaceae

Genus

Hoya

Species / Cultivar

Hoya carnosa

Origin

Hoya carnosa is native to East and Southeast Asia, including China, Taiwan and Japan. In its natural habitat, it mainly grows as a climbing or epiphytic plant in bright and humid subtropical and tropical forests.

Foliage

The foliage of Hoya carnosa is thick, fleshy and slightly waxy. Its oval to elliptical leaves display an attractive medium to dark green colour with a glossy surface. This succulent-like texture allows the plant to store part of its water reserves.

Growth habit and development

This plant has a climbing or trailing growth habit. Its moderate to fast development allows it to easily colonise branches, cork panels, supports or plant structures. Its long stems can reach several metres under good growing conditions.

Flowering

Under suitable conditions, Hoya carnosa produces beautiful umbels made up of small star-shaped flowers, usually white to pale pink with a pink to red centre. The flowers have a characteristic waxy appearance and may be delicately fragrant. It is recommended not to remove old flower spurs, as the plant can bloom again from the same structures.

Cultivation

Hoya carnosa prefers bright indirect light, moderate to high humidity and a very well-draining, aerated substrate. Allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid intense direct sunlight and prolonged excess moisture around the roots.

Terrarium compatibility

Humid tropical terrarium: Yes, if well ventilated
Paludarium: Yes
Tropical vivarium: Yes
Nano terrarium: No
Indoor cultivation: Yes

Thanks to its climbing habit and robust foliage, this plant is particularly suitable for planting the vertical areas of large tropical terrariums. Good air circulation is recommended to prevent excessive stagnant humidity.

Recommended substrate

A light, airy and highly draining substrate made from coco fibre or coco chips, sphagnum moss, fine bark, perlite and mineral drainage components will encourage healthy growth and strong root development. Hoya carnosa particularly appreciates substrates similar to those used for epiphytic plants.

Watering

Water moderately using low-mineral or low-limescale water and allow the surface of the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid standing water and permanently waterlogged substrates, which may damage the root system.

Humidity

This plant appreciates humidity levels between 50% and 80%. Higher humidity is also well tolerated provided that good ventilation is maintained.

Temperature

Ideal growing temperature: 18°C to 28°C. Avoid prolonged temperatures below 12-15°C and cold drafts.

Growth

Moderate to fast growth. The stems can reach several metres at maturity, but the plant responds very well to pruning and can easily be maintained at a suitable size for the terrarium or growing area.

Current size

Plant supplied in a pot. Size may vary depending on the season, growth stage and availability.

Maintenance

Regularly remove old or damaged leaves and prune the stems when necessary to control the plant’s development. Maintain good ventilation and avoid excessive watering. Do not cut old flower spurs, as they may produce flowers again in future blooming cycles.

Why choose Hoya carnosa?

Hoya carnosa is highly appreciated for its thick glossy foliage, decorative climbing habit, robustness and beautiful star-shaped flowers. It is an excellent choice for creating natural vertical vegetation in a tropical terrarium, paludarium or tropical indoor plant display.
