Vriesea fenestralis Linden & André
Vriesea fenestralis is currently accepted as a botanical species.
The species is native to southeastern Brazil, mainly Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro. It naturally grows as an epiphyte in wet tropical biomes.
Size S: approximately 10 to 15 cm
The foliage is one of the main ornamental features of Vriesea fenestralis. Green leaves are marked with darker transverse and reticulate patterns, producing a characteristic windowed or net-like appearance.
On young plants, the foliage pattern may continue to intensify as the plant develops.
The plant forms a regular rosette of relatively flexible, arching leaves.
The 10–15 cm S size makes it easy to integrate into tropical terrariums while allowing room for its larger mature development.
Vriesea fenestralis can be mounted directly onto a branch, natural root or cork panel.
A small amount of sphagnum moss around the roots can help establishment while maintaining good airflow around the base.
When grown in a pot, use a highly aerated and free-draining mixture containing fine bark, coco chips, perlite, volcanic rock and sphagnum moss.
Avoid heavy or permanently waterlogged substrates.
Keep a small amount of soft or low-mineral water inside the central rosette and refresh it regularly.
The root zone should remain lightly moist but well ventilated.
Humidity of approximately 70% to 90% is particularly suitable for this species.
Good airflow remains essential, especially in heavily misted terrariums.
Ideal growing temperature: approximately 20°C to 27°C.
Avoid prolonged cold conditions and cold draughts.
Vriesea fenestralis prefers medium to bright filtered light.
Good light helps maintain strong foliage markings and balanced rosette growth. Avoid intense direct sunlight through glass.
Slow to moderate growth. The plant gradually develops a broader and increasingly graphic rosette.
At maturity, Vriesea fenestralis produces an upright inflorescence typical of the genus Vriesea.
The S-sized plant offered here is primarily intended for growth and collection before reaching flowering maturity.
Propagation is mainly carried out by separating offsets once sufficiently developed.
Refresh the water held inside the central rosette regularly and remove old or damaged leaves when necessary.
Maintain good airflow to prevent stagnant moisture.
Use a very weakly dosed bromeliad fertiliser occasionally during active growth.
Avoid high concentrations and mineral salt accumulation.
Vriesea fenestralis is especially valued for its highly graphic reticulate foliage and its status as a genuine botanical species.
The S size makes it easy to integrate into a tropical display from a young stage and observe its gradual development.
Mount your Vriesea fenestralis slightly above ground level on a root or cork panel in a bright, humid and well-ventilated position.
Combined with mosses, ferns and smaller bromeliads, it creates a particularly natural rainforest-style display.
