Description

Blechnum gibbum 'Silver Lady' is an elegant tropical fern appreciated for its upright habit and long, finely divided bright green fronds arranged in a regular rosette. Over time, it can develop a short stipe, giving it the appearance of a miniature tree fern. Its dense and graphic foliage makes it ideal for adding immediate volume and a lush tropical atmosphere to large terrariums, paludariums, greenhouses and indoor planted displays.

Botanical family

Blechnaceae

Genus

Blechnum

Species / Cultivar

Blechnum gibbum 'Silver Lady'

Origin

Blechnum gibbum is native to the South Pacific, particularly New Caledonia and Vanuatu. It naturally grows in humid tropical environments where it benefits from warm temperatures, high humidity and soils rich in organic matter.

Foliage

The foliage consists of long, narrow, pinnate and finely divided fronds. Their bright to deep green colour and regular arrangement around the centre of the plant give this fern a particularly elegant and structured appearance.

New fronds emerge from the centre of the rosette and gradually unfold outwards.

Growth habit and development

This fern develops a dense, upright and regular rosette. As it matures, it may form a short vertical stipe topped with a crown of fronds, creating the characteristic appearance of a small tree fern.

It gradually requires more space and is therefore best suited to large terrariums, paludariums and tropical greenhouses.

Cultivation

Blechnum gibbum 'Silver Lady' prefers bright filtered or indirect light, high atmospheric humidity and good ventilation. It grows best in a fresh, organic-rich and well-draining substrate.

Avoid intense direct sunlight and complete drying of the substrate.

Terrarium compatibility

  • Humid tropical terrarium: Yes, large volume
  • Paludarium: Yes, excellent
  • Tropical vivarium: Yes
  • Nano terrarium: No
  • Indoor cultivation: Yes
  • Tropical greenhouse: Yes, excellent

Blechnum gibbum 'Silver Lady' is particularly useful for structuring the background of a large tropical terrarium or as a central feature in a paludarium.

Its finely divided foliage quickly creates a lush rainforest appearance.

Recommended substrate

Use a rich, lightweight and well-draining substrate composed, for example, of coco fibre, fine bark, organic matter, perlite, volcanic rock and a small proportion of sphagnum moss.

The substrate should remain consistently fresh while allowing good airflow around the roots.

Watering

Keep the substrate regularly moist using soft or low-limescale water. Blechnum gibbum 'Silver Lady' appreciates constant moisture but should not remain permanently waterlogged.

Avoid prolonged periods of drought, which may quickly cause browning of the frond tips.

Humidity

This fern appreciates high humidity, ideally around 70% to 90%.

A humid atmosphere encourages healthy new fronds and helps prevent foliage from drying out. Good ventilation remains important to avoid stagnant conditions.

Temperature

Ideal growing temperature: approximately 18°C to 26°C.

Blechnum gibbum is a tropical fern sensitive to cold. It is best maintained above approximately 15°C and protected from frost.

Growth

Moderate growth. Under favourable conditions, the plant regularly produces new fronds from the centre of its crown.

At maturity, it can reach approximately 80 to 120 cm in height, sometimes more depending on growing conditions.

Current size

The plant is supplied in the pot size and format indicated in the product specifications. Height, number of fronds and foliage density may vary slightly depending on the individual plant, season and shipment.

Maintenance

Remove old, yellowing or damaged fronds at their base using clean and disinfected tools.

Maintain regular substrate moisture and avoid placing the plant directly next to a radiator, heat source or dry draught.

Fertilisation

Apply a balanced fertiliser for green plants or ferns at a low concentration approximately every three to four weeks during the growing period.

Reduce feeding when growth slows and avoid excessive doses that may damage the roots.

Propagation

Propagation is mainly carried out from spores. Division may occasionally be possible on sufficiently mature specimens, although recovery can be relatively slow.

Toxicity

Blechnum gibbum 'Silver Lady' is not generally considered a highly toxic plant. Nevertheless, ingestion should be avoided and compatibility should always be checked with the animal species housed in the terrarium or vivarium.

Why choose Blechnum gibbum 'Silver Lady'?

Blechnum gibbum 'Silver Lady' is a highly elegant tropical fern combining finely divided foliage, a structured growth habit and the appearance of a miniature tree fern. It is an excellent choice for quickly adding height, volume and a strong tropical presence to large terrariums, paludariums and humid greenhouses.

JungleBox advice

Place Blechnum gibbum 'Silver Lady' in a bright area protected from direct sunlight and leave enough space around the rosette for the fronds to develop naturally.

Combine it with mosses, Selaginella, small Aroids, Begonia or other tropical ferns to recreate a lush rainforest understory.
