Asplenium nidus 'Variegata' is a striking tropical fern valued for its long glossy fronds arranged in a rosette and marked with cream to pale yellow variegation. This bright form creates immediate contrast in humid tropical terrariums, paludariums and jungle-style planted displays.
Its bird’s-nest growth habit gives it a broad, structured appearance, making it an excellent midground or background plant. The variegation varies naturally from frond to frond, giving each specimen a unique look.

Asplenium nidus 'Variegata'
Asplenium nidus is a tropical epiphytic fern widely distributed across tropical Asia and the Pacific. It naturally grows on tree trunks, in branch forks and in humid shaded rainforest environments.
The plant forms a rosette of long, broad, flexible and glossy entire fronds. In the 'Variegata' form, the green foliage is irregularly marked with cream to pale yellow areas.
The prominent central vein further enhances its graphic appearance.
Asplenium nidus 'Variegata' forms a dense rosette, with fronds initially upright and gradually arching as they lengthen.
At maturity, it can become relatively large and is therefore better suited to medium and large tropical enclosures.
This fern can be grown on a substantial root, cork trunk or within a substrate pocket integrated into the display.
It prefers an organic but well-aerated growing medium to avoid root suffocation.
Use a light, humus-rich and free-draining substrate containing coco fibre, fine bark, sphagnum moss, perlite and well-decomposed organic matter.
The substrate should remain lightly moist without staying permanently waterlogged.
Maintain regular substrate moisture using soft or low-mineral water.
Avoid allowing water to remain permanently stagnant in the centre of the rosette, especially indoors or in poorly ventilated terrariums.
Humidity of approximately 70% to 90% is particularly suitable for this fern.
Good airflow remains important to prevent excessive stagnant moisture.
Ideal growing temperature: approximately 20°C to 28°C.
Avoid prolonged cold conditions and cold draughts.
Asplenium nidus 'Variegata' prefers medium to bright filtered light.
Good light helps maintain attractive variegation. Because the pale areas are more sensitive, avoid harsh direct sunlight that may scorch the foliage.
Moderate growth. New fronds emerge from the centre of the rosette and gradually lengthen.
The variegated form may grow slightly more slowly than a fully green Asplenium nidus.
Propagation is mainly carried out commercially through spores or specialist production techniques. With variegated forms, maintaining identical variegation can be more difficult.
Remove old or damaged fronds at the base when necessary.
Avoid frequently disturbing the centre of the rosette, where new fronds emerge.
Use a very weakly dosed tropical plant or fern fertiliser during active growth.
Avoid overfeeding, which may damage the roots or sensitive variegated areas.
This fern stands out for its bright variegated foliage, giving it a much more graphic appearance than a standard green Asplenium nidus.
It immediately adds volume, brightness and a strong tropical atmosphere to large terrariums and planted paludariums.
Place Asplenium nidus 'Variegata' in a humid, bright position protected from intense direct sunlight. Mounting it on a substantial root or within an elevated substrate pocket enhances its natural appearance.
Combine it with mosses, Neoregelia and smaller ferns to create a balanced tropical understory display.
