With deeply divided fronds shaped like small green hands held above slender dark stems, Doryopteris pedata looks unlike a conventional fern. Supplied in a 12 cm pot at approximately 30–40 cm tall, it instantly adds height, texture and movement to tropical displays without visually overwhelming them.

Doryopteris pedata, currently accepted botanically as Hemionitis doryopteris, is a distinctive tropical fern valued for its highly graphic foliage. Its deeply divided fronds open like small hands or fans carried on slender dark stems.
Supplied in a Ø 12 cm pot at approximately 30–40 cm tall, it already provides excellent volume and makes a striking midground fern for spacious tropical terrariums, emerged paludarium sections and humid planted displays.

Approximately 30–40 cm tall
The species is native from the Caribbean to northern Venezuela, including Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and several islands of the Lesser Antilles.
It naturally grows in humid tropical environments.
The foliage is the defining feature of this fern. Sterile fronds have a distinctive palm-like shape, while fertile fronds are generally carried higher and develop narrower segments.
Dark veins and slender almost-black stems create strong contrast with the green leaf blades.
Doryopteris pedata forms a compact clump of upright to slightly spreading fronds.
Mature plants may reach several tens of centimetres in height while retaining a light and airy appearance.
Use a light, humus-rich and free-draining substrate containing coco humus, perlite, fine bark and a small amount of sphagnum moss.
The growing medium should remain fresh and lightly moist while maintaining good root aeration.
Maintain consistent substrate moisture without keeping it permanently waterlogged.
Allow the surface to begin drying slightly between waterings and avoid stagnant water around the roots.
Humidity of approximately 60% to 85% is particularly suitable.
Good airflow remains beneficial, especially in enclosed terrariums.
Ideal growing temperature: approximately 18°C to 26°C.
Avoid prolonged cold conditions. This fern performs best under relatively stable tropical conditions.
Doryopteris pedata prefers soft to medium filtered light.
Bright diffused conditions encourage compact, well-shaped foliage. Avoid harsh direct sunlight through glass.
Slow to moderate growth. The plant gradually develops a denser clump as new fronds emerge from the rhizome.
Like all ferns, Doryopteris pedata does not produce flowers or seeds. It reproduces naturally through spores carried on fertile fronds.
Remove old fronds once they become dry or damaged to encourage fresh growth.
Avoid keeping the foliage permanently wet without adequate ventilation.
Use a very dilute fern or tropical plant fertiliser during active growth.
Light occasional feeding is preferable to concentrated applications.
With fronds shaped like small green hands held above almost-black stems, Doryopteris pedata has an instantly recognisable silhouette.
Supplied in a 12 cm pot at around 30–40 cm tall, it already adds strong texture and movement to tropical displays while remaining visually lighter than many conventional large ferns.
Place it in a lightly shaded section behind lower plants such as Fittonia, Begonia or compact ferns. Its upright habit and palmate fronds make it particularly effective for creating several layers of vegetation.
