Pteris straminea, currently treated botanically as Pteris dentata, is a tropical fern with fine, airy and delicately divided foliage. Its slender green fronds form a light, graceful clump that immediately creates a humid forest-floor atmosphere.
Supplied in a Ø 9 cm pot at approximately 15 cm tall, it is particularly suitable for tropical terrariums, emerged paludarium sections and small to medium planted displays.
Pteridaceae
Pteris straminea
Pteris dentata Forssk.
Pteris straminea Cordem.
Ø 9 cm
Approximately 15 cm tall
The fronds are slender, upright to slightly arching and composed of numerous narrow segments that give the plant a delicate, feathery appearance.
Fresh green foliage creates a dense planted effect without looking visually heavy, making this fern easy to combine with roots, mosses and more compact tropical plants.
Pteris straminea forms a clump of upright fronds from a short rhizome.
The young plants offered remain compact, although the species can become considerably larger when grown for long periods under favourable conditions. In terrariums, occasional pruning can easily control its size.
Use a light, humus-rich and free-draining substrate that retains regular moisture without remaining permanently saturated.
A mix containing coco humus or fibre, perlite, fine bark and a small amount of sphagnum moss works particularly well.
Keep the substrate consistently lightly moist.
Avoid both complete drying and stagnant water around the root system.
Humidity of approximately 60% to 85% is particularly suitable.
Good atmospheric humidity encourages flexible healthy fronds, although a minimum level of airflow remains beneficial.
Ideal growing temperature: approximately 18°C to 26°C.
Avoid prolonged cold conditions and dry draughts.
Pteris straminea prefers soft to medium filtered light and may tolerate brighter conditions when fully diffused.
Excessively strong light may cause yellowing or drying of the fronds.
Moderate growth. New fronds gradually emerge from the rhizome and quickly create a denser clump under warm, humid and well-lit conditions.
Like all ferns, Pteris straminea does not produce flowers or seeds.
It reproduces naturally through spores carried on fertile fronds.
Remove older fronds once they yellow or dry to maintain a clean appearance and encourage fresh growth.
Occasional pruning can also help control its development in smaller terrariums.
Use a very dilute fern or tropical plant fertiliser occasionally during active growth.
Light and infrequent feeding is generally sufficient.
With its fine, lightweight fronds, Pteris straminea quickly creates dense vegetation without visually closing the display. It brings the natural, slightly wild character of a fern emerging between roots on a tropical forest floor.
Supplied in a 9 cm pot at approximately 15 cm tall, it is an ideal size for immediately planting the foreground or midground of a terrarium.
Plant it at the base of a root or slightly behind lower-growing plants such as Fittonia, Labisia or compact Begonia. Its fine foliage creates depth while allowing the natural structure of the display to remain visible.
