Monstera ‘Burle Marx Flame’
Monstera ‘Burle Marx Flame’ is a horticultural form associated with tropical Monstera species originating from Central and South America. It is mainly cultivated for the remarkable morphology of its mature foliage.
Young leaves are relatively simple, then become progressively more divided as the plant matures. Adult leaves may develop numerous narrow, elongated and deeply separated lobes, creating a striking flame-like effect. This transformation of the foliage is one of the main attractions of this collectible plant.
Monstera ‘Burle Marx Flame’ has a climbing growth habit and benefits greatly from vertical support. When grown on a moss pole, cork panel or other textured support, it can develop progressively larger and more deeply divided leaves.
Place the plant in bright indirect light. Sufficient light encourages steady growth and supports the development of mature, deeply divided foliage. Avoid intense direct sunlight, which may scorch the leaves.
Water when the upper few centimeters of the substrate begin to dry. Keep moisture levels regular without allowing the substrate to remain constantly waterlogged. Good watering management is essential for maintaining a healthy root system.
This Monstera appreciates high humidity, ideally between 60 and 80%. Good ambient humidity supports healthy leaf development and helps limit dry leaf edges.
Maintain temperatures between 18 and 28°C whenever possible. Avoid temperatures below 15°C, cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.
Use a highly aerated, well-draining and organic substrate. An Aroid mix containing coco chips, bark, perlite, sphagnum moss and organic matter provides excellent root aeration while maintaining regular moisture.
A vertical support is strongly recommended to encourage mature growth. A sphagnum moss pole or textured support that allows aerial roots to attach can help the plant produce larger and more deeply divided leaves.
Due to its climbing growth habit and potential mature size, Monstera ‘Burle Marx Flame’ is mainly suited to large tropical greenhouses, spacious planted installations and very large open terrariums. Young specimens can temporarily be grown in spacious, well-ventilated terrariums.
Guide the stems onto their support as they grow and keep aerial roots slightly moist when directed into a moss pole. Remove damaged leaves when necessary and apply a diluted balanced fertilizer during the active growing season.
To encourage the spectacular leaf divisions characteristic of Monstera ‘Burle Marx Flame’, focus on three key elements: strong indirect light, high humidity and, above all, a vertical support that allows the plant to climb and mature.
Like many members of the Araceae family, Monstera contains calcium oxalate crystals and should not be ingested. Keep the plant out of reach of young children and pets likely to chew the foliage.
