Neoregelia laevis is a botanical bromeliad native to southern and southeastern Brazil. It naturally grows as an epiphyte in wet tropical environments and develops a compact to intermediate rosette particularly well suited to tropical terrariums, paludariums and epiphytic displays.
Its natural appearance, rosette growth habit and suitability for mounting on roots, branches or cork make it an excellent species for rainforest-style planted displays.

Neoregelia laevis (Mez) L.B.Sm.
Neoregelia laevis is currently accepted as a botanical species.
The species is native to Brazil, primarily from Rio de Janeiro south to Santa Catarina. It naturally grows as an epiphyte in wet tropical biomes.
The plant forms a regular rosette of relatively flexible to firm leaves arranged around a central water-holding cup.
The foliage is mainly green and may develop stronger tones depending on light intensity, plant maturity and growing conditions.
Neoregelia laevis has a compact to intermediate growth habit, making it well suited to medium-sized tropical terrariums.
Over time, it produces offsets around the base and can gradually form a dense natural-looking group.
Neoregelia laevis can be mounted directly onto a branch, natural root or cork panel to recreate its natural growth habit.
A small amount of sphagnum moss around the roots can help establishment while keeping the base well aerated.
When grown in a pot, use a highly aerated and free-draining mixture containing fine bark, coco chips, perlite, volcanic rock and sphagnum moss.
Avoid heavy or permanently waterlogged substrates.
Keep a small amount of soft or low-mineral water inside the central rosette and refresh it regularly.
The root zone can remain lightly moist but should never remain permanently saturated.
Humidity of approximately 65% to 90% is suitable in tropical terrarium conditions.
Good airflow remains essential, particularly in heavily misted enclosures.
Ideal growing temperature: approximately 20°C to 28°C.
Avoid prolonged cold conditions and cold draughts.
Neoregelia laevis prefers bright filtered light.
Good light helps maintain a compact rosette and healthy foliage. Avoid sudden exposure to intense direct sunlight through glass.
Moderate growth. Once established, the plant gradually produces offsets that can be left attached to form a natural clump.
As with other Neoregelia, the flowers emerge directly from the centre of the rosette within the central water-holding cup.
After flowering, the main rosette gradually declines while offsets continue the plant.
Propagation is mainly carried out by separating offsets once they have reached a suitable size.
Refresh the water held inside the rosette regularly and remove old or damaged leaves when necessary.
Maintain good airflow around the plant to prevent permanently stagnant moisture.
Use a very weakly dosed bromeliad fertiliser occasionally during active growth.
Avoid high concentrations and mineral salt accumulation inside the central cup.
Neoregelia laevis is particularly appealing to bromeliad enthusiasts looking for a true botanical species with a natural appearance and excellent suitability for humid tropical displays.
Its compact to intermediate size and epiphytic growth habit make it easy to integrate onto roots, branches and vertical backgrounds.
Mount your Neoregelia laevis slightly above ground level on a root or cork panel in a bright, well-ventilated position.
Combined with mosses, ferns and small tropical plants, it creates a particularly natural rainforest-style display.
