Monstera adansonii is native to Tropical America, where it naturally grows as a climber or hemiepiphyte in wet tropical forests.
The leaves are ovate to elliptic, flexible and naturally perforated. These fenestrations are one of the most recognisable features of the species.
In the 'Variegata' form, the green foliage also develops irregular cream to white areas ranging from fine marbling and speckles to broad pale sectors.
The amount of white can vary considerably between leaves. Some remain mainly green, while others may become heavily variegated.
White areas contain little or no chlorophyll and are naturally more delicate, requiring a good balance of light, humidity and airflow.
Monstera adansonii is naturally a climbing plant. Its stems produce aerial roots that gradually attach to tree trunks, natural roots and other vertical supports.
Climbing cultivation generally encourages larger and more mature foliage than trailing growth.
Grow the plant against a natural root, cork panel, moss pole, Hygrolon or planted vertical background.
A slightly humid surface encourages aerial roots to attach and allows the plant to gradually cover the display.
Use a highly aerated and free-draining aroid mix containing coco chips, fine bark, perlite, sphagnum moss and light organic material.
The growing medium should remain lightly moist without becoming permanently waterlogged.
Water when the surface of the substrate begins to dry slightly.
Avoid prolonged standing water around the roots and preferably use soft or low-mineral water.
Humidity of approximately 65% to 90% is particularly suitable.
Higher humidity encourages aerial root development but should always be combined with adequate airflow.
Ideal growing temperature: approximately 20°C to 28°C.
Avoid prolonged cold conditions and cold draughts.
Monstera adansonii 'Variegata' prefers medium to bright filtered light.
Good lighting helps maintain compact growth and attractive variegation. White sectors are more sensitive to scorching from harsh direct sunlight.
Moderate to fast growth under warm and humid conditions with a suitable climbing support.
The variegated form may grow slightly more slowly than fully green Monstera adansonii because it contains less chlorophyll.
Mature Monstera adansonii can produce typical aroid inflorescences consisting of a spathe surrounding a spadix.
In cultivation, however, the main ornamental feature remains its perforated and variegated foliage.
Propagation is easily carried out from stem cuttings containing at least one node and ideally an aerial root.
Train new shoots onto their support and prune overly long stems when necessary to maintain dense growth suitable for the enclosure.
If the plant produces too many almost completely white leaves, maintaining enough green foliage will help preserve strong growth.
Use a low-strength tropical plant or aroid fertiliser occasionally during active growth.
Avoid excessive feeding, especially in small substrate volumes.
This form combines two highly decorative features: the iconic natural fenestrations of Monstera adansonii and white variegation that changes from leaf to leaf.
Its climbing habit also makes it excellent for gradually covering roots and vertical backgrounds while introducing a true collector plant to a tropical display.
Give your Monstera adansonii 'Variegata' a vertical support while still young. A natural root or slightly humid cork panel will encourage aerial root attachment and help the plant develop larger, more strongly perforated foliage.
Like many Araceae, this plant contains calcium oxalate crystals. The sap may be irritating and the plant should not be ingested.
